Photo/Drawing Process
Process Overview:
My artistic process begins with the creation of intricate drawings on multiple layers of translucent tracing paper. These layered drawings form the foundation of my work and serve as a bridge between traditional drawing and photography.
Once the drawings are complete, I take them into the darkroom where they assume a role similar to that of a photographic negative. This technique is reminiscent of creating a photogram, where objects are placed directly on light-sensitive paper to create an image.
Due to the large scale of my prints, the development process requires a departure from conventional methods. Instead of using standard developing trays, I use larger troughs filled with chemical solutions to accommodate the size of the paper. Once the image has been fully developed, I carefully sponge the print to ensure it dries evenly, preserving the integrity of the final artwork.
Artistic Approach:
My artwork represents a hybrid of traditional drawing and photographic processes. By using hand-drawn images as negatives, I create unique photographic prints that capture the nuances of both mediums. This approach allows me to explore the intersection of drawing and photography, resulting in pieces that possess both the immediacy of a drawing and the depth and tone of a photograph.
To provide insight into my creative process, I've included a selection of images below. These photographs showcase my studio workspace, offering a glimpse into the environment where my layered drawings come to life. You'll also find examples of the drawings themselves, revealing the intricacy and detail that goes into each piece before it enters the darkroom.
Additionally, I've included images that document the final stages of my process: the washing and drying of large-scale, mural-sized prints in the darkroom. These photographs highlight the scale of my work and the unique challenges involved in creating and handling such large photographic prints.
Through this visual journey, from initial sketches to final prints, I hope to offer a comprehensive view of my artistic process and the fusion of drawing and photography that defines my work.
